HS Nashville Parent/Student Meeting #1

We had a great first meeting and I am totally PUMPED about the team God has brought together for this trip.  We appreciate all our parents coming out to get the information straight for our trip! Last night we covered all of the details of the trip and handed out forms.  If you missed the meeting or lost any of the forms then click on the links below to access the files and information. We also handed out support letter instructions and those too are included below. The links below take you to the power point shared during last night's meeting, forms you may need to fill out, and additional information about our trip.  If you have any question about anything in them then please feel free to email Hawley at hsmith@wcchapel.org.

For our trip this summer we will be looking at the Biblical Character of Elijah and his encounter with God in 1 Kings 19.  We looked at the first part of this story in Verses 1-9 last night and how God was giving him exactly what Elijah needed in preparation to hear from God. We had the opportunity to connect Elijah's experience to our own in relation to this trip.  If you would like to follow along, the questions we discussed are included below.

During the second half of our meeting the team began to study the character of Elijah in 1 Kings 19.  Luke mentioned how they are going on this trip not only to serve the poor in North Carolina, but also to encounter God.  So, the team studied Elijah's encounter with God as a model for how they can prepare for their encounter with God on the trip.  Below are the small group questions that the students talked through after look taught on the 1 Kings passage.

HS Nicaragua Parent Meeting Recap

Thanks to all the families that were able to make it to the Parent Meeting on Tuesday night! We are so excited to walk through this process together, and know that God is going to show up in amazing ways throughout our preparations and the trip. We will continue to post valuable resources to the blog after every meeting to help you stay informed and connected. Please make sure you are also signed up for the appropriate text list so that we can send you meeting/deadline reminders and other announcements. You must resubscribe to the text list every year, so please make sure you are on the list!
Parents, text the word NICAPARENT to the number 41411.
Students, text the word NICASTUDENT to the number 41411.

First, here is the Parent Meeting Powerpoint that we walked through at Tuesday's meeting. The powerpoint contains information on deadlines, contact information, and other practical resources.

Next, I've attached the checklist from the meeting: Checklist #1. We will give each student a checklist at every meeting with important information about upcoming assignments and deadlines. Please make sure you read over the checklist and return the listed documents. The following documents were included in your packets and/or listed on the checklist and are due at the next team meeting on May 13th:

  • ORPHANetwork Trip Application
  • A copy of each student's passport
  • A WCC Parental Consent Form (Many of you already have this one on file from either HS CBA Day or the HS Ski Trip. Email Alexis at akincaid@wcchapel.org if you are unsure whether or not you have one on file for this year.)
  • A Photo Release Form

Finally, I have also uploaded the Support Letter Instructions. This document has important information on how to write and send support letters. Please read over the document carefully. We strongly encourage students to send their support letters no later than Sunday, May 4th!

Our next team meeting is Tuesday, May 13th from 6:30-8:30pm in Classroom 156 (on the East Hallway near the Student Ministries Lounge).

If you have any questions or need any additional information, please contact Hawley (at 215-498-1928 or hsmith@wcchapel.org) or Alexis (at 941-1241 or akincaid@wcchapel.org). Thanks, everyone!

Home Sweet Home - Landed in DC!

The team just landed safely in DC! Thank you for all your prayers over the course of the trip. We are so grateful for your support. This will be our final update for this trip. Thanks again for everything.

Headed home!

We are boarding the plane to Reagan airport! Everything is on time and our ETA is 6:00PM. See you all soon!

Team is Back in America

The team just landed safely at the Miami airport! We will post another update just before we depart for our final flight to DC (around 3:30pm as long as everything continues to be on-time). We can't wait to share with you all more details about the trip and all that God has done.

Day Five!

Today was our final day in Nicaragua and it couldn't have ended better! Our groups split up again for the morning, half the group at the feeding center in Leon and half the group at the feeding center in Posoltega. We continued training the kids on hygiene and came up with Spanish songs for washing their hands and brushing their teeth and eating healthy foods. We fed the children lunch at each location and after eating ourselves, we packed up all the Posoltega children and brought them over to Leon for a Hygiene Graduation Ceremony. It was very exciting having all of the kids together in one place. We had a dance party and played games until the ceremony commenced. Each child was called up one by one to cheers from everyone as they received their Hygiene Graduation certificate and t-shirt. The kids were so proud and felt a clear sense of accomplishment. It was a great way to end our time with the children. Saying our goodbyes was difficult but it just validated the strong bonds we have built with the kids over this week.

We concluded the amazing day with another wonderful meal back at the hotel before ending with a powerful "porch time" led by Evan and Lynette. He challenged us to listen for God's still, small voice in the sound of silence. We each wrote down on a piece of paper what holds us back from following God and threw it into a fire. We were each "anointed" to go out from Nicaragua and bless others when we get back to the States. God was evident in every aspect of our trip and He was clearly working in and through us every step of the way. We are sad to leave but excited to share all that we have experienced with our friends and family when we get home!
